Why Chasing Balance Leaves You Burned Out
We’ve all been told we can “have it all” — the thriving career, the perfect relationship, the ideal home, the fit body — and that we should balance them all effortlessly, all at once. But here’s the quiet truth: chasing perfect balance often leaves us feeling anything but balanced. It leaves us scattered, stretched thin, and silently resentful.
If you’ve ever wondered why no matter how much you juggle, something always feels left behind, you’re not failing. You’re simply living inside a myth. Balance, as it’s often defined, isn’t real.
Who I Am and Why I Care
I’m Leezá, an international transformation specialist. I help people cut through impossible standards and live in ways that are honest, humane, and deeply fulfilling. For over two decades, I’ve watched leaders, parents, and professionals alike chase “balance” — only to collapse under the weight of it. The truth? You were never meant to do it all. You were meant to do what matters most to you.
Step One: Clarity — Exposing the False Promise
Balance suggests that you can distribute your energy evenly across every area of life at all times, like pieces rolling perfectly down a conveyor belt. But life doesn’t work like that — and neither do relationships, careers, or families.
Think about a healthy relationship. On paper, it’s 50/50. But in reality, it’s fluid: sometimes 70/30, sometimes 40/60, sometimes even 100/0 when life gets heavy. The balance comes in the long run — not in every moment.
Life, too, has seasons: times to grow, to rest, to focus, to dare, to slow down. Burnout happens when we forget this, when we demand 100% from ourselves in all areas, all the time. True clarity comes when you realize you’re not failing by letting some things rest — you’re simply living in rhythm with your humanity.
Step Two: Ownership — Choosing What Matters Most
Empowerment begins with ownership. You, and only you, get to decide what’s most important in your life. Not your boss, your peers, or even your well-meaning friends.
When you try to give everything equal weight, your energy gets diluted and your purpose begins to blur. I’ve seen leaders enter their careers with fire in their hearts, only to lose sight of themselves under the pressure of “doing it all.” They didn’t lack talent. They lacked permission to prioritize.
One simple tool I recommend is a Love List: write down what you love most, what you value, who you want to spend time with, the places you long to be. Use that list as your compass. Let it guide where your energy goes.

Step Three: Resolution — Making Peace With Trade-Offs
Every choice has consequences. You can’t hold everything equally, and that’s not failure — it’s reality.
When my children were young, I used to tell them: “You can call someone names if you want. But it’s like picking up dog poop — you have to hold it first.” Everything we do has a consequence.
Maybe you stay in a job with long hours because it gives you mornings with your kids or helps fund your dream home. Or maybe you leave the job to reclaim your energy. Either way, there’s a trade-off. The question isn’t how to avoid consequences — it’s which ones you’re willing to accept.
This is what I call self-studentship: the art of explaining yourself to yourself. Knowing who you are, why you’re making the choices you’re making, and where you’re going. When you practice this, you stop striving for a fantasy and start living honestly.
Step Four: Excellence — Thriving in Alignment
Excellence isn’t about spreading yourself thin and trying to excel at everything at once. It’s about showing up fully present in what matters most right now.
Think about something you’ve done really well. Chances are, you were all in — focused, aligned, and fully present. That’s excellence. It’s not perfection. It’s not juggling a thousand things. It’s depth over frenzy.
When you give your full attention to what’s in front of you — whether that’s a relationship, a project, or your health — you create results that are not only successful but deeply satisfying. That’s the kind of excellence that builds a life worth living.
A Practice for This Week
This week, pause and ask yourself: What season am I in right now?
Is it a season to build? To rest? To heal? To create? Then choose one area of your life to focus on. Release the pressure to balance everything. Be fully present with what’s in front of you — whether that’s work, love, health, or home.
Not perfection. Not balance. Presence. That’s what brings peace.
The Essence of It All
You were not meant to do everything for everyone at all times. You were meant to do what matters most to you, in its season, with your whole heart. That’s not failure — that’s freedom.
