The Pain of Being Told You’re “Too Much”
Have you ever been told you’re too much—too intense, too sensitive, too ambitious, too emotional, or too loud? And did hearing that make you shrink, dim your light, or try to be smaller so that others could feel more comfortable?
If so, you’re not alone. And more importantly—you’re not “too much.”
I’m Leezá Steindorf, award-winning author, international speaker, executive coach with the Forbes Coaches Council, and creator of the CORE Success system. Through Clarity, Ownership, Resolution, and Excellence, I help people design lives that are satisfying, aligned, and authentically their own.
If this message resonates, please like this article, share it with a friend who’s been told the same, and let’s walk through how to reclaim your wholeness.
Clarity: “Too Much” Is Not the Truth
The first step is clarity—recognizing that too much is not a fact. It’s not the temperature outside or the color of your shirt. It’s a perspective, a reflection of someone else’s discomfort with your power, presence, or energy.
When someone tells you that you’re “too much,” what they’re really saying is, “I don’t know how to handle what you’re bringing into this space.” That’s about them, not you.
Reframing this matters. You are not too loud—you’re passionate. You are not too intense—you’re tuned in. You are not too emotional—you’re expressive. Clarity means separating who you truly are from the fears and judgments that have been projected onto you.
By shifting the lens, you see that being “too much” is often just being fully alive.
Ownership: You Are Not Here to Make Others Comfortable
Ownership means embracing your traits without apology, even when they unsettle others. Too often, we’re taught that if others feel uncomfortable with us, we must change. But that’s a lie rooted in a culture that prioritizes conformity over authenticity.
You are not responsible for editing yourself into palatability. When you shrink yourself for someone else’s comfort, you’re abandoning your own power. You’re trading your authenticity for their approval—and that is far too high a cost.
Taking ownership means standing tall in who you are and recognizing what is yours to carry and what is not. Their discomfort is not yours to fix. Your job is to be the truest version of yourself and to bring your best forward.
Resolution: Healing the Fear of Rejection
The sting of being told you’re too much often awakens a deep fear—fear of rejection, of being unloved, of not belonging. Resolution is the process of healing that wound by realigning with your inherent worth.
You were created exactly as you are for a reason. If you believe you are “too much,” you’ll endlessly edit yourself—softening your voice, watering down your joy, diluting your brilliance. Ironically, this doesn’t create connection; it prevents it. Real connection can only happen when you bring your full self forward.
Resolution means reclaiming the truth: you are not “too much,” you are more than enough. You do not need to earn love by making yourself smaller. You deserve belonging exactly as you are.
Excellence: Your Boldness Is a Gift, Not a Liability
Excellence isn’t about being polished or perfect—it’s about integration. It’s living from the wholeness of who you are. And that includes your boldness.
Boldness is not arrogance. It’s not about being better than anyone else. It’s the courage to take up the space you were born to occupy. Excellence means refusing to apologize for your presence, your voice, or your brilliance.
When you allow yourself to be fully seen—quirks, passions, intensity and all—you give others permission to do the same. Your boldness becomes a mirror that reflects their own possibilities back to them. That is leadership. That is excellence.
The Takeaway: You Are Exactly Right
Let’s be clear: this world doesn’t need you to be less. It needs you to be real, whole, and fully expressed.
The next time you hear that you’re “too much,” try reframing it:
- You are not too loud—you are clear.
- You are not too intense—you are present.
- You are not too emotional—you are awake.
- You are not too much—you are more than enough.
So, breathe deeply and remember: you were never meant to shrink. You are exactly right, just as you are.
