We don’t always choose our circumstances. But we always choose how we meet them. Life doesn’t ask for permission when it shakes the ground under our feet. A sudden loss. A massive move. A health scare. Or simply the slow drip of change we didn’t ask for but can’t avoid.
And still—
Within that chaos, there is a kind of power waiting for you. It’s called intention.
What Is Intention, Really?
For me, intention isn’t about goal-setting.
It’s not about hustle or outcomes.
It’s about what experience I want to give myself in a particular situation—and who I want to be as I move through it.
Intention is the invisible architecture of how you show up.
It shapes your emotional climate before anyone else walks in the room.
It’s not something you do. It’s something you bring.
Living Intentionally in Real Life: A Personal Story
When my life abroad ended abruptly, I was gutted.
After decades of living overseas, raising my children in multiple cultures, cultivating work that was deeply aligned and adventurous—everything changed. I was moving back to North America under uncertain and emotionally taxing conditions.
It would’ve been easy to spiral: the grief, the unknowns, the logistics, the pressure of guiding my two kids through a seismic transition. And yes—I had moments of doubt, anger, even heartbreak. But I knew one thing:
I didn’t want to suffer my way through it.
So I set an intention: ease.
Not control.
Not escape.
Just ease.
I made packing fun. We played music while boxing our lives into suitcases. I took us all out for massages the day before our flight. I turned our departure into a ritual—hanging signs, celebrating a new chapter, honoring the closing one.
None of that changed the facts.
But it absolutely changed the experience.
Because I was intentional about how I wanted to feel, I created a reality in which peace and ease could exist—even inside uncertainty.
Why Intention Matters More Than You Think
Without intention, you’re just reacting.
To people. To stress. To headlines. To habits.
With intention, you reclaim authorship of your life.
Here’s what that shift makes possible:
- Agency over autopilot: You stop moving through your day by default and start choosing on purpose.
- Emotional sovereignty: You feel your feelings without letting them run the show.
- Aligned leadership: Whether you’re guiding a team, a family, or just yourself—you model resilience with grace.
- Creative clarity: You generate experiences that match your values, even when conditions are far from ideal.
Intention is not a luxury. It’s a leadership skill—especially when things feel out of control.
How to Practice Intention—Even in the Middle of Chaos
Creating an intentional life doesn’t require perfection. It requires practice. Awareness. Choice. And kindness with yourself.
Here’s where to start:
Before a meeting, a conversation, a trip, or even a Tuesday—
- Ask: What experience do I want to give myself right now?
- Define: How do I want to feel as I move through this?
- Choose: What small action can align me with that feeling?
- Reflect: Is this response mine, or is it a pattern?
- Adjust: What would bring more ease or integrity into this moment?
These aren’t checkboxes—they’re invitations.
To return to yourself. To remember your power.
To choose how you want to live, not just how you react.
Being Intentional Doesn’t Mean Being Perfect
Let’s be clear: intention is not about getting it right all the time.
You will still have days where you lose your center.
Moments when fear takes the mic.
Conversations where grace goes out the window.
That’s part of being human.
But the more you practice intentionality, the faster you’ll come back to yourself.
The more resilient your nervous system becomes.
The clearer your sense of direction, even when the map changes.
Choose the Experience You Want—Today
You don’t need to wait for perfect conditions.
Or a quiet moment.
Or someone else’s permission.
Right now, in the middle of your real life, you can choose:
- To slow down
- To lead with compassion
- To shift from anxiety to curiosity
- To give yourself the experience you want—not just the one you inherited
You have the power to make your life a place where you feel at home.
Set the intention.
Let it lead.
Then watch the world around you respond.
