Never Again? At Least Stop the Bullying

Bullying is commonplace for our youth and has drastic proportions of violence, cruelty, public humiliation, and, as we now know first hand, fatal events. It goes unseen by outsiders and unreported by bystanders. Adults are often oblivious to this plight. It is seriously harmful … and can be stopped. We can do this by educating our teachers and parents, and empowering and equipping our children to understand, identify, expose, and prevent bullying in all its forms and to advocate, for themselves and others.

There is physical, emotional, sexual, and social bullying, all of which have devastating effects. Those who bully thrive on the sense of power and control they get from their bullying behaviors so they are not inclined to stop on their own. It is our responsibility to stop them and provide help. We now know the results if we do not do just that.

Bullying Statistics

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, bullying happens most commonly to middle school youth, with almost 50 percent of them reporting having been bullied. A past report of Indicators Of School Crime And Safety: 2017 concluded that during the 2015–16 school year in the United States:

• There were 47 student, staff, and nonstudent school-associated violent deaths between July 2014 and June 2015: 28 homicides, 17 suicides, 2 legal intervention deaths.
• 14% of 15-year-old students report that student learning was hindered by intimidation and bullying among students.
• 10% of teachers reported being threatened with injury by a student and 6% being physically attacked.

Clearly, we have a problem, and it is complex. And we also have solutions, and they are multi-faceted. There are indicators that a child is troubled, or is being bullied but adults often miss seeing the indicators, and why they often do not believe there are issues going on. Pointing fingers will not solve this crisis. Banding together will.

We are recommending for approval and implementation of peace education and violence prevention program that has been successfully taught in schools internationally.
